FROM MUD-BRICK TO MODERN HEALTHCARE: NTOBWE HEALTH CENTER’S TRANSFORMATION

  News

In the hills of Ndaro Sector, Ngororero District, a remarkable transformation is taking place. Once a modest mud-brick facility offering limited services, Ntobwe Health Center is now on a promising path to becoming a fully medicalized health center, thanks to substantial infrastructure upgrades funded under the Pro-Poor Basket Development Fund, managed by the Local Administrative Entities Development Agency (LODA).

The Pro-Poor Basket Development Fund is financed by the Government of France through AFD, the Government of Germany through KfW, and the Government of Luxembourg through LuxDev.

Established in 2000, Ntobwe Health Center began as a small health post under the supervision of Nyange Health Center. It wasn’t until 2008 that it gained the status of a standalone health center. For years, however, the facility struggled to meet the needs of the local population. Constructed with mud bricks, it lacked the capacity and infrastructure to provide dignified care. Maternity services were especially challenging expectant mothers often shared beds.

“Before the renovation, services were provided in a small, overcrowded space. It was not suitable for either patients or staff,” explained Thomas Surayimana, Head of Ntobwe Health Center.

One of the women who experienced this first-hand is Iradukunda, a new mother who gave birth just two days before a recent field visit. She shared how previously, women in labor had to share beds or lie on the ground due to limited space and lack of equipment.

Today, the facility is undergoing a complete transformation. The first phase of the renovation has been completed, delivering a modern two floor brick building equipped with new medical supplies, including maternity beds and essential equipment. Several services, including maternity care, are now fully operational, significantly improving service delivery and patient experience.

“Now that the new building is operational, services are being provided more efficiently, and citizens are satisfied. It's also important for our staff to work in a clean and dignified environment. It boosts morale and service quality,” added Surayimana.

As the health center expands, local leaders and health professionals have a clear vision to elevate Ntobwe Health Center to the level of a medicalized facility. This would allow the center to employ a full-time medical doctor and offer advanced services locally, reducing patient referrals to Muhororo District Hospital.

“Once we become a medicalized health center, we’ll be able to serve more patients and handle cases that used to be transferred to hospitals. We would also support nearby health centers by receiving their referrals,” said Surayimana.

Before the upgrades, Ntobwe Health Center could serve an estimated 2,500 people. Upon completion of the second phase, its capacity is expected to exceed 3,000 residents. The expansion represents not only better infrastructure but a stronger commitment to equitable healthcare access for rural populations.

Ntobwe Health Center’s journey, from a mud-brick structure to a modern healthcare facility is a powerful example of community-centered development. Through continued support and strategic investment, this transformation is poised to bring lasting health benefits to thousands of residents in Ngororero District and beyond.
