Residents and visitors to Nyagatare District City now have a modern public space for recreation, social interaction and community engagement following the completion of the ‘Nyagatare Urban Eco Park’, a 3-hectare facility developed near Nyagatare Hospital.

The Park, developed at a cost of 465 million Frw, has transformed what was previously a swamp into an attractive green space designed to contribute to the city’s urban development and improve the quality of life of its residents.

Completed in February 2026, the project was implemented by Nyagatare District through the Rwanda Urban Development Project Phase II (RUDP II), with support from the Local Administrative Entities Development Agency (LODA) and financing from the World Bank.

The Nyagatare Urban Eco Park provides a range of facilities that residents and visitors can use for recreation, social interaction and other activities.

Among the facilities are coffee shops, free internet access and spaces where people can meet, hold discussions and spend time in a green and attractive environment.

The free internet service is particularly beneficial to young people, providing them with a convenient space to connect, access information, conduct research and explore digital opportunities.

For residents, the park provides an accessible public space within the city where they can interact, exchange ideas and participate in recreational activities. For people travelling through Nyagatare, it also offers a convenient place to take a break and enjoy the city’s improved urban environment.

Beyond providing a recreational space, the project has also contributed to employment and local economic development.

During its implementation, the construction of the park created 70 permanent jobs, providing employment opportunities for people in the local community.

The completed facility is also expected to create opportunities for businesses and service providers operating within and around the park. Coffee shops and other services can attract residents and visitors, increasing economic activity in the surrounding area.

By bringing people into the city center and creating a space where businesses can provide services, the park contributes to a more vibrant local economy while making Nyagatare City more attractive to residents, visitors and potential investors.
